St. Patrick's Day Auroras 2013

This was one of the most amazing aurora displays I have ever seen.  It lasted a really long time through two bursts, but was worth standing in the freezing cold (18 degrees or so) from roughly 2am-4:30am.  I met up with WI chaser Scott Weberpal who had gotten an earlier start on the aurora hunt than I had but with little luck.

We started with a few clouds but they blew off to the south just in time.  For 45 minutes north of Milwaukee this was a spectacular show.  Pillars of red and magenta, and there was this rolling flickering of waves of light - it almost seemed like lightning.
